In the 1980s Dr Wolverton and a team of NASA scientists found that houseplants could remove toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichlorethylene and ammonia from the air. Since those original findings, more than 50 houseplants have been tested for their ability to remove toxic substances.
