Words From A Dermatologist
We spoke with Dr Mike Roberts, a private Dermatological consultant and former lecturer, to ask about his experience of cellulite and how he advises to treat it. This is what he had to say:
“Given the prevalence of cellulite amongst women, it is unfortunate that it is seen as a condition that requires treatment and often the motivation for a patient seeking a consultation is purely for aesthetic reasons. I have however encountered some quite severe cases where cellulite has caused the patient pain or where the extent of the cellulite is such that it could almost be regarded as disfiguring.”
“Right now, there is nosingle stand out treatment for cellulite that I can recommend to patients. My advice is usually to make lifestyle changes that can gradually improve the appearance of the affected area. ”
“For most women, cellulite is not a condition requiring medical attention. However if the cellulite is severe enough to cause pain or discomfort, I would recommend they visit their GP.”
“My advice to women first discovering they have cellulite is to examine their lifestyle and see if they can make changes to prevent the cellulite worsening. Often the underlying cause will be out of a patient’s control, but the cellulite is gradually made worse through a poor diet and sedentary behaviour.”
“Stress is another common aggravating factor. Many of the women who visit me have extremely hectic lives- juggling professional careers, raising a family and social commitments and they don’t appreciate the impact on their bodies that this can bring. Usually these effects are further compounded by high alcohol consumption and tobacco use.”
