Am I Overweight?

There’s no escaping the truth, cellulite is caused by excess fat and often cellulite can be reduced simply by losing a few pounds. If this applies to you, then losing weight should probably be the first thing you look at doing if you wish to shift cellulite.

The reason why women gain fat on their thighs and bums when they gain weight is due to the natural distribution of fat, and it’s usually these areas that are the most cellulite afflicted as a result. Even women who are slim everywhere else can pick up cellulite due to this distribution.

Fortunately, slimming and reducing these fatty areas also often quickly reduces cellulite. So start by taking a good look at yourself and consider if you need to lose some weight. The chances are that, like most of us, you probably could. According to national statistics, almost half of us are overweight in some way. If you’re unsure consider speaking to a doctor or a good friend to help you assess.

You could also try calculating your body mass index (BMI) to help you work this out. Your body mass index is your weight in kilos, divided by your height (in meters) squared. So for example if you are 5ft 8in (1.72) and you weigh 10 stone 9lbs (67.5), your BMI would be 67.5 / (1.72 x 1.72) = 22.81.

This score is then compared on a scale used by the World Health Organisation:

Less Than 18.5 – Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 – Normal Weight
25 – 29.9 – Overweight
30 – 34.9 – Obese
35 – 39.9 – Very Obese
40 or More – Extremely Obese

So, if you find that you score is above 25, it may be time to shift some fat.
